Evolution by natural selection is the cornerstone of modern biology. It offers an internally consistent mechanism for the diversity and universality we observe among life on earth. The theory of evolution is a product of generations of scientists often working independently of one another. Evidence for evolution comes from an abundance of observational and experimental data. Our understanding of evolution and genetics enables scientists to map out the evolutionary relationships between species, which has also resulted in falsification of previous classifications of species. The study of evolution to bring us closer to a better understanding of how life has changed over time, but also provides scientists with tools to make predictions about the origins and future of life on earth.

Essential idea

Science is an effort to understand the history of the natural world and how that world works using physical evidence as the basis of that understanding.

Global Citizens: The study of science is an international endeavor
Unique individuals: While humans are very closely identical to one another at the species level, the small difference in genetic material gives rise to nearly infinite diversity
Lifelong learners: The study of evolution is ongoing. As scientists learn more through careful

  1. Understand that evolution is the cornerstone of modern biology and is a theory based on overwhelming evidence that does not contradict it
  2. Explain the relationship between diversity and universality among life on earth
  3. Outline the mechanism of evolution by natural selection
  4. Give examples of evidence for evolution
  5. Evaluate scientific claims based on validity and reliability
  6. Explain the rise of antibiotic resistant bacteria
