Evolution by natural selection is the cornerstone of modern biology. It offers an internally consistent mechanism for the diversity and universality we observe among life on earth. The theory of evolution is a product of generations of scientists often working independently of one another. Evidence for evolution comes from an abundance of observational and experimental data. Our understanding of evolution and genetics enables scientists to map out the evolutionary relationships between species, which has also resulted in falsification of previous classifications of species. The study of evolution to bring us closer to a better understanding of how life has changed over time, but also provides scientists with tools to make predictions about the origins and future of life on earth.
