In this unit students will use valencies (represented as 'hands' or bonds) to work out chemical formulae. They will then gain experience in representing simple chemical reactions with balanced chemical equations and using chemical equations to deduce reacting masses. They will learn that balanced chemical equations can represent how much of a substance will react or be made. Students will also be introduced to atomic structure and electron configuration. Achievement of a full electron shell as a driving force for reaction. Simple representation of ionic bonding. Advanced students may appreciate the link between atomic structure, bonding and formulae. Data collection and analysis, graph plotting, and conclusion and evaluation skills will be reviewed. Throughout, theory will be supported by practical work.

Learning targets

  • Understands the information given by a chemical formula.
  • Can deduce chemical formulae from the number of bonds formed by each element (valency).
  • Can deduce formulae of compounds containing sulphate, carbonate, nitrate, hydroxide and ammonium.
  • Can write balanced chemical equations for any reaction covered in the course.
  • Advanced students Can relate atomic structure to reactivity and the formula of compounds formed.
